Hiring Process

What You Need to Know

 

 

The following is the progression (in order) of the hiring process for each position within the Bedford Police Department. Each step must be completed before progressing to the next one.

 

Police Officer

1. At any time, complete and return Job Interest Card - DO NOT FAX, please mail or hand deliver to:

2. Successfully complete Physical Fitness Test
The Test will be posted on the website under the EMPLOYMENT page. The fitness standards are as follows:

TEST (IN ORDER) MINIMUM
Push-ups (1 minute) 25
300 Meter Run 1:11
Sit-ups (1 minute) 29
1 1/2 mile run 16:28

 

3. Once you have passed the fitness test, you will be given a City Application and Personal History Statement to complete
4. You may be invited to participate in the Written Examination
5. If you pass the Written Examination, BPD will conduct a Pre-Employment Interview
6. BPD performs extensive background investigation
7. Attend Oral Review Board
8. Receive Conditional Job Offer
(Job offer is conditional based on the successful completion of a polygraph examination, psychological evaluation and a drug screen/stress test/physical)
 
Dispatcher
1. Complete City Application and Personal History Statement
2. Successfully complete a typing test (35 wpm) and Perfex test
3. Attend Pre-Employment Interview
4. BPD performs extensive background investigation
5. Attend Oral Review Board
6. Receive Conditional Job Offer
(Job offer is conditional based on the successful completion of a polygraph examination, psychological evaluation and a drug screen/physical)
 
Public Service Officer
1. Complete City Application and Personal History Statement
2. Successfully complete a typing test (30 wpm)
3. Attend Pre-Employment Interview
4. BPD performs extensive background investigation
5. Attend Oral Review Board
6. Receive Conditional Job Offer
(Job offer is conditional based on the successful completion of a polygraph examination, and a drug screen/physical)
 
Detention Officer
1. Complete City Application and Personal History Statement
2. Attend Pre-Employment Interview
3. BPD performs extensive background investigation
4. Attend Oral Review Board
5. Receive Conditional Job Offer
(Job offer is conditional based on the successful completion of a polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and a drug screen/physical)
 
Animal Control
1. Complete City Application and Personal History Statement
2. Attend Pre-Employment Interview
3. BPD performs extensive background investigation
4. Attend Oral Review Board
5. Receive Conditional Job Offer
(Job offer is conditional based on the successful completion of a polygraph examination and a drug screen/physical)
 
Records Technician
1. Complete City Application and Personal History Statement
2. Successfully complete a typing test (40 wpm)
3. Attend Pre-Employment Interview
4. BPD performs extensive background investigation
5. Attend Oral Review Board
6. Receive Conditional Job Offer
(Job offer is conditional based on the successful completion of a polygraph examination and a drug screen/physical)
 
Administrative Secretary (Administration, CID, Patrol)
1. Complete City Application and Personal History Statement
2. Successfully complete a typing test (65 wpm)
3. Attend Pre-Employment Interview
4. BPD performs extensive background investigation
5. Attend Oral Review Board
6. Receive Conditional Job Offer
(Job offer is conditional based on the successful completion of a polygraph examination and a drug screen/physical)
